Once a site of 17th-century alum works, the bay was central to England’s dyeing industry, its cliffs quarried for the prized mineral that colored wool in shades of rich violet. But beneath the industry and trade lies a shoreline steeped in darker tales.

Fishermen whispered of wrecks drawn to the bay’s jagged rocks, their ships dashed against the headland in storms that rolled out of the North Sea without warning. Among them was the steamship Admiral Von Tromp, wrecked in 1976, her iron bones still rusting at low tide like a ghost from a newer age. And long before her, the coastline claimed countless wooden vessels—stories say their timbers still wash ashore, whispering with the salt wind.

Local legend tells of the Barguest, a monstrous black dog said to roam the cliffs on moonless nights, its red eyes glowing like embers as a warning of death.
