Once a site of 17th-century alum works, the bay was central to England’s dyeing industry, its cliffs quarried for the prized mineral that colored wool in shades of rich violet. Among them was the steamship Admiral Von Tromp, wrecked in 1976, her iron bones still rusting at low tide like a ghost from a newer age. Local legend tells of the Barguest, a monstrous black dog said to roam the cliffs on moonless nights, its red eyes glowing like embers as a warning of death. Some even say the waves at Saltwick carry the voices of drowned men—low, mournful calls that rise with the tide.
